Today is World Storytelling Day. Celebrate the art of oral storytelling today. Narrating stories has been done for centuries and is as old as humanity. It all started with crudely carved drawings done in caves by ancient man, to tell their tribe about their hunting experiences. Over the centuries the art of oral storytelling has evolved.
Storytelling today has reached a dynamic form and it is still evolving. There are stories told in books, there are stories that are show to us in movies, that educate and entertain us. There are stories of horror, comedy, thrillers, action, suspense, mystery, love and romance, being written and read almost every day. There world is filled with millions of stories and storytellers.
The Storyteller was always considered one of the most important individuals in a tribe, with the special wisdom and knowledge to impart in the form of stories. Oral storytelling is not as common as it used to be ages ago. We are all so busy with our lives that few of us have time to sit down and tell stories or listen to stories being told to us by a Storyteller.
You can celebrate Storytelling and the power of oral storytelling by getting friends and family together to tell stories. Encourage children to listen to stories and to create their own stories too. You could go to the local library and read some good stories or visit YouTube and listen to some wonderful stories.
Write a few stories or poems that tell stories and then read them out to your colleagues, family and friends, at the end of the day. You have a wide range of stories to choose from comedies, action, to romances and horror.
Have your own Storytelling Buffet of oral stories today, where everyone narrates a favorite story to the group. Have a happy world storytelling day today and every day, when you have the opportunity to be a Storyteller.
