The orders for the hot-cross buns,
Kept increasing every passing hour.
There were advance orders at the bakery,
There were the last-minute orders.
Buns, buns, buns, everyone was wanting,
The most delicious buns this Good Friday.
Children were looking at the Easter-egg baskets
That were on display at the local bakery
Parents, Godparents, Aunts and Uncles
Were queued up in a long never-ending line
From the bakery door, to the jewelry store
It was Good Friday morning in the city
There was a hive of prayer and activity
Easter eggs of all shapes and sizes
Were put in the bakery shop-window
Crowds of children were eagerly peeping in
Selecting the brightest and the largest Easter eggs
Easter was just a few exciting days away
Children wished it was here to stay
They were ready to dive into the feast
Easter eggs and hot-cross buns, please
Poet’s Note: When in Kolkata, India, during the period of Easter, remember to visit “Saldanha’s Bakery”, for some warm and delicious hot-cross buns and some delightful Easter Eggs.
