The Bajau tribe of Indonesia are the first known humans who are genetically adapted to diving. The tribe is also referred to as the “Sea Gypsies of Borneo”. They have been diving for centuries and the members of this tribe can stay at the bottom of the sea for thirteen minutes, without coming up to breathe. That sounds remarkable and humanly impossible. Yet, as a result of their amphibious lifestyle, they possess the genetic abilities to remain underwater for a longer period, than any ordinary human.
The Bajau people have lived in houseboats in the sea for over a thousand years. They can dive to 230 feet, using a set of weights and wooden goggles. It is not only a skill that these extraordinary people possess, but a genetic mutation, called the “sea nomad gene”, that imbues them with their great diving ability and they possess extra-large spleens. These larger spleens increase the oxygen in the blood and make staying underwater for so long possible.
This does show that humans are capable of adapting to any environment or situation over some time. We all know how easy it is to develop a bad habit. However, most of us would rather work on getting into a bad habit, than putting the same effort into developing a good one. It depends on what one would consider to be a bad habit. Food for one is poison for another.
As a writer, I would think that the first bad habit of procrastination needs to be stopped and instead, we should focus on the good habit of writing every day. Concentrating on the good habit of writing every day, would help more ideas to flow and ultimately, it is the perfect remedy to writer’s block. You will have a flood of great ideas and writer’s block and will become a figment of your creative imagination.
Humans can adapt to any situation in life. As a writer of fiction, I would also go so far as to say, that the day may arrive, when humanity colonizes the Moon and Mars, and humans, will live comfortably on both extra-terrestrial settlements when the Earth becomes uninhabitable.
What are your opinions on the adaptability of humans and does this idea have the “germ” that can create some amazing stories?
