Every reader wants to be entertained with the material he or she is reading. It is up to the writer to create literary pieces that speak to the reader at an emotional level. Facts are everywhere as are stories, waiting to be used, told, and re-told. However, it is up to the writer to use a blend of facts, with a touch of creativity, imagination, and a dose of the entertainment factor to make the writing interesting to read.
It is the interest and the enthusiasm of the writer, which is visible in the writings, that fill the literary material with entertaining value. After reading and practicing the art and craft of writing, any writer can produce articles, stories and poems, that jump of the page and speak to the reader.
There are some writers who use wit and humor in their writings to get positive responses from their readers. There are those writers who like to write serious stuff and so they only get serious readers to read their work. In some instances, writing humor or suspense comes naturally to the writer as they weave their words in the story.
“Suspense arises naturally from good writing - it's not a spice to be added separately.”
-Leigh Michaels
On the other hand, there are also writers who can switch between serious and humorous themes with no difficulty. This is only possible, after reading both types of materials, that a writer can create a literary piece, having facts, fun and entertainment. Eventually, it does help to keep writing and practicing the craft on a regular basis.
“At first I had no skills in writing comedy. I didn't know what a joke was, but, as someone once told me, your emotions follow your intent. If you create the intention of starting a comedy act, slowly your mind starts adjusting and you arrive at a new emotional state.”
-Steve Martin
Have you thought about your writing style as a writer and do you make an effort to be serious, when you like writing humor, or are you a humorous writer who finds it difficult writing serious articles? Whatever, your writing style it is good to try your hand at writing facts, fiction, humor, and reference materials so that you give yourself more options.
In most cases, the type of materials that a writer produces at any given time depends on his or her mood, the topic that they have selected, and the treatment which they wish to give that issue. This is entirely in the hands of the writer, who is the creator of the literary work. How do you make your judgment on the handling of a topic? In my case, I only decide on the treatment and the type of presentation I want to make, based on three factors, the issue discussed in the topic, the tone of the issue, serious or fun, and the relevance of the topic.
To put the comedy element into any piece of writing you could write something unexpected when events could not get worse, they just get worse, be unpredictable, use comedic words, phrases, exploit a character’s weaknesses, and do not tell the reader the whole story, till later. A few writers of comedy worth mentioning are Jerry Seinfeld, P.G. Wodehouse, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, and Mel Brooks.
Every piece of writing whether it is informational, a thriller, suspense, or a comedy needs to entertain the reader. The reader needs to keep waiting to know the end of the story while enjoying every line and page, as the writer crafts his words. When a reader starts to read a literary piece or opens the page of a book, it is like the stage curtains rise.
“Let Me Entertain You!”, are the words that the readers want to hear at the beginning of the story or article. One interesting line or phrase sets the mood for the reader and he or she is waiting to be entertained, as he or she keeps reading and is willing to devote time to read the story. It is only at the end, when the reader is satisfied with the piece that he or she leaves the writer “an applause”, in the form of feedback or a review. Keep writing and entertaining your readers.
