The young boy was lighting candles at the altar in the chapel. His parents stood close by, watching him. The ten-year-old lit his candles as he prayed for his grandparents, who had recently passed away. Kennyās parents were getting restless and wanted to move away, but the boy kept picking up candles and lighting them in the Chapel.
āWhy are you lighting so many candles, Kenny?ā, asked his mother Gloria.
āIām sending prayers to heaven and with a hundred prayers, I want Grandad and Grandma to return to us.ā
āThey cannot come back to us, Kenny. They are always watching over us. Your grandparents are in Heaven now,ā said his father, Albert, who had lost both parents six months ago in an automobile accident.
The years passed, and Kenny was a young man. He was lighting ten candles for his grandparents and for his mother, who had passed away a year ago. He smiled to himself as he lit his candles and thought about the time, he had lit a hundred candles to get his grandparents back. It did not work, as he had imagined in his young mind. However, something else did.
The young man knew whenever he lit candles he would see his departed loved ones in his dreams. They were always present watching over him, as his dad had told him all those years ago. Kenny was a good son and grandson, he always lit candles at the start of every new month and for all special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. Though Kenny could not see his family members who had died, he always remembered them and knew that every candle lit, was a prayer, he sent to heaven, to show that he still cared for his mother and his grandparents.
Poetās Note: I thought of this story today, 15th October, as I lit candles for my mother, who passed away a few years ago. Today, was my motherās birthday and I know that she watches over me.
