The dragon was large and he was fierce,
It was supernatural and it was a curse.
The dragon terrorized the villages all around,
He was worshipped, and he never frowned.
The dragon was feared and hated for miles around,
He destroyed everything on that grassy ground.
The villages offered him trinkets and tributes,
He was offered goats, cows, and fresh fruits.
There came a time when there was less of everything.
There were fewer fruits, and fewer cattle to offer for food.
There was nothing more to give up to the beast.
He was now offered humans for his daily feast.
This sacrificial offering of innocent people continued,
It was the dragon’s offering and his due,
We do not know if this legend is absolutely true.
The time came for a hero to enter the story,
He did not come hunting for fame or for glory.
St. George came to tame and kill the dragon,
To chop off its head and rip off its wings.
St. George needed to save the beautiful princess fair,
As she stood chained to the tree, with her flaxen hair.
The warrior saint killed the dragon with his sword of might,
It was a deadly battle that carried on through the dark night.
St. George saved the princess from death in the dragon’s lair,
The event became every Storyteller’s tale beyond compare.
The story of George slaying the Dragon is now legend,
It is the power of myth and lore that will never end.
Celebrate St. George’s day with ale today,
When the dragon met his gory end, we say.
With an empty belly and without a friend,
That beast of power met his fateful end.
The dragon set towns alight with his fiery breath,
Then met his maker in his gruesome death.
Good does vanquish evil as the world turns,
Good triumphs as the spawn of evil burns.
As the bloody sword is hammered in the fiery forge,
Remember the exploits of courageous St. George.
