Who can forget their family home, whether it was just one room or two, a flat, a farm, a cottage, a penthouse or a house? Every part of the family home is special to us, especially if we spent our childhood, teenage years, youth and part of adulthood at the same place. I still remember my family home fondly, from every room to every door, every window, very spot I used as a child, to the memories of birthdays, anniversaries, weekends, holidays, victories, failures and celebrations that were held within the walls of the family home.
I can recall the time I celebrated my thirteenth birthday at home, the day I brought my girlfriend home, the day we got engaged and the day, I set off with my parents to the local church to get married. I recall the day that I graduated, the birthdays, the 25th wedding anniversary of my parents, the family get togethers, the Christmas Eves, the Christmas days and all the New Year days, we celebrated at the family home. There are so many happy memories at the family home and also the sad ones, when Mum and then recently Dad passed away.
The family home is like a Memory Palace, where every room in the home, has a special connected memory to it in our lives. I look at the dining table and I see my parents and my sister sitting around that table having our meals and conversations over the years. I look at the bookcases and remember all the books that we displayed on every shelf.
Would you consider your family home and now your own home to be a type of memory palace, with every room and every corner of the home connected to some small and some warm, yet special memory in your life? I would love to know the importance that your family home holds for you in life and what are the special moments that make it so important to you.
