I was born in India and grew up in the city of Calcutta, now called Kolkata. I belong to a minority mixed-race community called Anglo-Indians. The community, which is now endangered as the numbers have reduced dramatically over the last 420 years, came about when the British and European traders visited India. The men had affairs and some married Indian women. Their offspring came to be known as Anglo-Indians.
Anglo-Indians are the only ethnic minority community, whose mother tongue is English, who have always followed a Western lifestyle, have English surnames and who are Christian or Catholic in their beliefs. A large number of the community have immigrated to countries like Canada, America, Australia, England, New Zealand, Spain and other countries. An Anglo-Indian can trace his or her ancestry from the father’s side to Britain or a European country.

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the knowledgeable and amiable creator of the Anglo-Indian-themed website, Conrad Abraham, for a chat on the Anglo-Indian community, my father Melvyn Brown and my work as an author, who has written about the community and other topics over the years. On the website, there are a lot of useful materials on the community, from food to culture, heritage and traditions. You are welcome to visit the site and get to know more about the Anglo-Indian community in India and abroad.
