“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
― Groucho Marx
I grew up watching television and I remember enjoying myself, as a child, a teenager, and now as an adult looking at some great shows. I did not watch too many programs as I had my favorites. Parents have always known that the best way to keep a child quiet was to place them in front of the television. Things have changed over the years and now the best way to keep a child quiet is to give them a tech gadget, like a phone, a laptop, an X-box, or a Playstation to keep them busy.
Television has always been a source of information and entertainment. I remember watching some of the best movies and television series on the magic box. Not many individuals sit and watch television unless it is at the weekend, and they want to have a break from sitting at their desktop computers or lounging on the sofa doing work with their laptops close at hand.
Sports and family shows including movies and serials are best watched with family and friends together every evening or at the weekend. There is nothing better than watching a loved television program with the whole family sitting around and spending family time.
Television plays an important role for the elderly in the family during the day and during the evenings. The mornings can be busy with daily chores, but the evenings and the weekends can get lonely, especially when the elderly live on their own. Watching the latest news on mobile phones can get tiring while watching the latest news bulletins, with on-the-spot reporting can be exhilarating.
I feel that there may come a time in the future when television will be obsolete, but for now, it is still an integral part of every household as an important media device. Television has undergone so many changes over the decades and it has been transformed into a slicker version of its original form. There are still so many innovations in the field of television taking place today. The production of the visuals and the quality of reporting has also undergone drastic transformations.
There is nothing better than watching live news taking place all around the world than watching it on television, as my Dad loves to say. He should know, as he is a writer and he knows the power of the written and spoken word. Dad values the power of visuals, as a picture does speak a million words, as does the audio-visual media of television.
“Thanks to television, for the first time the young are seeing history made before it is censored by their elders.”
- Margaret Mead
