Every morning when we awake, a single thought enters our mind. What is the idea that entered your mind this morning? Was it a person, a place, an object or was it just a feeling? The first thought that entered my mind this morning was the image of a crow. It could be because I heard the sound of a crow making a noise outside. What did I imagine it to mean? I thought it meant that there was news for me. Did I receive news that day, of course, I did, in the several emails that were in my inbox. These images are not prophetic, but they are great tools to encourage our imagination as writers.
Yesterday morning, I awoke with the image of a river. Was it possible that I had seen a river flowing in a television programme the previous evening or was it my subconscious mind telling me that life is like a river and we need to flow with it? The best way to have a productive life is to move with the flow rather than against the force of a river.
I remember waking up one morning with the image of a large silver bell. What could it mean, I asked myself, and was there a message from my subconscious informing me that Christmas was on its way and I needed to write articles on the festive season? Perhaps it was just my imagination running wild as it usually does and I needed an excuse to write about the holiday season.
There is no deep and hidden meaning to the images, sounds or thoughts that we wake up with in the mornings. However, it is a useful exercise to help us as writers to become more aware of the way our subconscious minds, creatively use images, sounds and feelings to stay in contact with us. What was the first image of a person, place or object which popped into your mind this morning? We are visual beings and we think in images, which are so powerful and we need to use them to our creative advantage.

A lovely reflection, Warren
