This author was called the greatest British novelist and social critic of the Victorian age. He was the man who gave us one of the most memorable stories, that we love to see as movies or read during the festive period, titled “The Christmas Carol”. There have been several versions of this story, but reading the book itself is an amazing experience, as we hear the voice of the writer.
Charles Dickens was the writer who is known for his powerful stories that touched upon so many issues, that existed in his time. It is with the help of his novels and stories that we are able to know so much of life during the Victorian era. Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Pickwick Papers and Hard Times are an essential part of his work.
However, it was only today, that I thought about this genius. I walked into a bookstore and noticed a collection of the “Letters of Charles Dickens”. I thought it must be a sign. I needed to create an article on the writings of Charles Dickens. What was the purpose of this article? I realized that we as writers, need to create works that reflect our lives and the society that we live in today.
Writers are the scribes, who are not working under the orders of a King or Pharoah. We have the freedom to write about any aspect of our lives and world today. We have the wonderful opportunity to write, publish and share our work with the world in seconds. This is a fantastic gift, that we do not always appreciate. Imagine if Charles Dickens had the chance of writing and sharing his work with the world in seconds? Dickens would have said that this is a magical age in which we live and it is a renaissance and Golden Age for Literature. What do you feel as a writer living in the 21st century, is it an opportunity to write great material or a curse, as these are troubled times in human history?
