An apprentice is not always a young person, but in most cases tends to be young and just out of school or college. We are all familiar with the apprentice, the intern or the volunteer who enters a company and is eager to begin in the new workplace. It isn't easy at first, but gradually he or she remembers the names of colleagues and gets to know how the system works over time. Sometimes, the apprentice is kept on if he or she shows promise, while they usually move to bigger and better opportunities.
I was the young apprentice who joined a library. I worked at that library for eleven years. An apprentice is always eager and ready to begin in his or her field. Every apprentice, slowly, moves into every area of the industry he or she is working in. Were you an apprentice in your field of work? At the start, most apprentices have the mind of a sponge and absorb all the information that is supplied to them.
Would you have enjoyed being a sorcerer’s apprentice? Working under the Moon and Stars, making strange and magical concoctions that do wondrous things to make magic happen. The job of an apprentice can be hard at times and he or she has to struggle till they “learn the ropes”, after which everything can be done smoothly. One day the apprentice becomes the Master or Mistress of the trade.
As the years go on and the apprentice replaces the mentor or gets a senior position, he or she is capable of handling the most complex tasks in the shortest period and does the work efficiently. It is not long before the individual is required to train the recruits as a fresh band of apprentices joins the company. The young apprentice arrives with hopes and dreams about becoming someone of great importance in the new firm.
I enjoyed being an apprentice in a library, in an art gallery, in a publishing company, a social service organization and in a transport company. It does open your mind to the idea that the world is filled with so many different types of work being done and so many diverse cultures and people involved. What did you love and enjoy as an apprentice?
