Writing Exercise: Shall We Write About Broken Promises Today?
The ones we broke and those broken by others
We have all heard about broken promises. We see them in the cinema and in the stories we have read. We remember stories about broken promises to loved ones when we read the poems of poets and the stories written by writers. We are not new to broken promises. Some of us have made those promises and we have broken them. At the same time, some were promised many things in life, only to be disappointed, when those great promises said earnestly with words from a loved one were heartlessly broken.
This is a short story about a broken promise. In this writing exercise, it is up to you to complete this short story and publish it anywhere. Just remember to link your story to this story. Promise me that you will complete this story and link it to mine. Keep this promise, from one writer to another.
The Soldier’s Broken Promise
Anastasia was in love but she was certain that the promise he made her was broken. The year was 1939 and World War II was moving all over the globe like wildfire. She was a teenager when she joined the Nursing College in Calcutta. After six months of nursing training, she was transferred to London to work in a large hospital. Anastasia was living in a new country, very different from the city of Calcutta. At the hospital, she met Jim a young wounded soldier, with a broken leg.
They fell in love and lived in a tiny apartment in the city of London, close to the hospital. The man recovered and he moved around with a crutch for a year. During this time. Anastasia took care of him and kept working at the hospital. After a year, the young man Jim rejoined the army. A month later he was transferred to Greece where his regiment was stationed. Before he left Anastasia discovered that she was pregnant with his child. The hospital told her that she needed to go back home to have the child. Jim promised Anastasia that he would visit her in Calcutta and bring her and the child back to England.
A year passed. Anastasia’s daughter Natalie was now almost a year old. Anastasia was waiting for Jim to arrive at the Airport in Calcutta. The flight from London had arrived an hour ago. Jim had not walked out of the airport yet. Had Jim broken his promise to her and had he abandoned her and their child?
