Writing Prompt: Is the library or the librarian more important?
Have you created a fictional library and librarian?
There are movies where there were fictional librarians that some of us can remember. I can recall the unidentified librarian, played by Stan Lee the comic creator, in the movie, “The Amazing Spiderman.” Doctor Abigail Chase in “National Treasure”. The Grey Lady Librarian in “Ghostbusters”. Brooks Hatlen in “The Shawshank Redemption.” There is a television serial that I enjoyed watching, “The Librarians”, with Flynn Carsen, the Librarian. Evelyn Carnahan, in “The Mummy Series”, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Another unforgettable librarian was Rupert Giles, in the television series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.
I have always felt, that the library and the librarian are both equally important as they complement one another. A library is a lost treasure trove of information if it is not managed by the right librarian. A librarian of great skills would be lost in any other profession. However, with the advent of the internet and the World Wide Web, we are all librarians in a way, as we hunt for information on various subjects. The libraries of the world, are now available for anyone on a quest.
In the world of fiction, there have been libraries created that were managed by great librarians. Have you ever written a story about a remarkable librarian in a fictional library in one of your novels or stories? Do you think that the library is more important than the librarian and with the internet at our fingertips, do we need libraries and librarians? I feel that as long as books are printed and published, we will need physical libraries under the watchful eyes of wise librarians.
