It was a cold and wintry day,
When the tall pine tree arrived.
There were four men carrying the tree,
They even broke part of the balcony.
That bushy tree was the tallest one,
At ten feet it weighed more than a tonne.
It was difficult to place in their small home.
The men bent the top to make it like a dome.
The day the tall pine tree arrived,
Was the day that the home came alive.
The three children were excited to decorate the tree,
While the two dogs danced around playfully.
The father and the three children started decorating,
That tall Christmas tree with lights and decorations.
The tree with its bent head looked magnificent,
It was ready for its Angel and every wrapped present.
On Christmas Day the decorating was finally done.
On Christmas morning the tree broke a record,
It received the tallest Christmas tree Award,
The father and his three children had won.
The family knew that there was an angel,
Smiling down on them that Christmas Day.
He missed his wife and the children their mother,
It was six months since she had peacefully passed away.
Poet’s Note: This poem is dedicated to my dad, who passed away almost six months ago on the 25th of June 2023. I remember that Christmas Eve, when I was a child, when my father brought the tallest Christmas Tree home. My sister and myself were so excited and it is something we still remember today as adults. Thanks, dad, for buying us the tallest Christmas Tree ever and for making every Christmas one to remember, from surprise gifts to cinema tickets for three shows in one day.
Beautiful, poignant poem.
This is a beautiful memory, Warren. I could feel the joy of that day. :) I didn't know your mother passed away when you were so young.
